Αντιγράφω από το έγγραφο που μας έστειλαν τα Island Batik και συνοδεύει αυτή την πρόκληση.

“A miniature quilt is a wonderful way to explore a piecing or quilting technique or make a pattern without a huge investment in time and fabric. They are defined as small versions of full sized quilts and range in size between 12 to 24 inches on a side to being no larger than 24 inches square”.

“Ενα μίνι κουιλτάκι είναι ένας εξαιρετικός τρόπος να εξερευνήσει κάποιος μια τεχνική πάτσγουορκ ή καπιτοναρίσματος ή να φτιάξει κάποιος ένα πατρόν χωρίς να επενδύσει χρόνο ή χρήμα. Καθορίζονται ως μικρές εκδοχές κανονικών παπλωμάτων με μέγεθος μεταξύ 30 και 60 εκ. στην μια πλευρά ή αν είναι τετράγωνα, το μέγιστο της πλευράς δεν πρέπει να είναι μεγαλύτερο από 60 εκ.“

We could choose any type, any technique we wanted and any fabric except the surprise collection.

Μπορούσαμε να διαλέξουμε οποιοδήποτε τύπο έργου, οποιαδήποτε τεχνική θέλαμε και οποιοδήποτε ύφασμα εκτός από αυτά που βρίσκονταν στη Συλλογή – έκπληξη.

It was the perfect time for me to make a spiral shape, since this is a shape I read a lot of its’ symbolism lately.

Ήταν για μένα η τέλεια ευκαιρία να φτιάξω μία σπείρα, μια και είχα διαβάσει αρκετά το τελευταίο διάστημα για τον συμβολισμό της.

My reference book is “Serendipity Quilts” by Susan Carlson owned some years ago. Her work is among my favorite ones.

Το βιβλίο αναφοράς μου είναι το “Serendipity Quilts” της Susan Carlson αγορασμένο εδώ και αρκετά χρόνια. Η δουλειά της είναι ανάμεσα στις αγαπημένες μου.

I decided on the spiral and chose my fabrics. I had opened my latest box, sent by Island Batik in the context of their Ambassadors Program the previous day and I thought of using a set of precuts, “The Floral Fun”.

Αποφάσισα λοιπόν για τη σπείρα και διάλεξα τα υφάσματά μου. Μια και την προηγούμενη μέρα είχα παραλάβει το τελευταίο κουτί που μου έστειλαν τα Island Batik στο πλαίσιο του Προγράμματος των Ambassadors , σκέφτηκα να χρησιμοποιήσω ένα σετ προ-κομμένων με λωρίδες το “The Floral Fun”.

I started tidely like this and

Αρχισα έτσι τακτοποιημένα και

I ended up somehow like this, having taken out more fabric from my stash builders.

συνέχισα και τελείωσα κάπως έτσι, έχοντας ανοίξει και κάποια από τα ρολάκια μου.

The technique Susan uses for her quilts is mosaic technique. I designed a spiral freehand and then cut it and transferred the contour on my base fabric.

Η τεχνική που χρησιμοποιεί η Σούζαν είναι η τεχνική του μωσαϊκού. Σχεδιάσα με ελεύθερο χέρι μια σπείρα και μετά την έκοψα και τη μετέφερα στο ύφασμα βάσης.

I started adding pieces until covered everything. I fixed them using pins. Then the question was: to tulle or not to tulle. Since the white tulle I only had, was lowering the dark colors and I did not want it, I decided on adding tulle only on the background pieces.

Ξεκίνησα να προσθέτω κομμάτια μέχρι που κάλυψα το σχημα και το φοντο. Στερέωσα με καρφίτσες, Μετά το ερώτημα ήταν: Να βάλω τούλι ή να μη βάλω; Μια και το μόνο άσπρο τούλι που είχα, κατέβαζε πολύ τα έντονα χρώματα και δεν το ήθελα αυτό. Ετσι αποφάσισα να βάλω τούλι μόνο στο φόντο.

This means that I put tulle allover the project, I made a small zig zag stitch around the spiral and then with my ripper I ripped the tulle that was over the spiral.

Αυτό σημαίνει ότι έβαλα τούλι πάνω από ολόκληρο το έργο και έκανα ένα στενό ζιγκ-ζαγκ πάνω στο περίγραμμα της σπείρας. Μετά ξήλωσα και αφαίρεσα το τούλι πάνω από τη σπείρα.

The batting I used was Thermore by Hobbs from my latest box. I put it double.

Η βάτα που χρησιμοποίησα ήταν η Thermore της Hobbs από το τελευταίο κουτί. Την έβαλα διπλή.

I quilted/fixed the spiral’ pieces and I made the same thing with the background, all in free motion. I then added some red and dark yellow elements to make it brighter. I also added red binding, taken from the stash builders. No harm on the photo but when you see it in close, the attention was drawn by the spiral.

Καπιτονάρισα και στερέωσα ταυτόχρονα τα κομμάτια της σπείρας και έκανα το ίδιο και με το φόντο, όλα με ελεύθερο καπιτονάρισμα. Μετά πρόσθεσα κάποια ακόμα στοιχεία σε κόκκινο και σκούρο κίτρινο για να γίνει όλο το έργο λίγο πιο φωτεινό. Επίσης ρέλιασα με σκούρο κόκκινο από τα ρολλάκια μου. Δεν φαίνεται κακό στη φωτογραφία, αλλά από κοντά το κόκκινο ρέλι έπνιγε τη σπείρα.

Therefore, I ripped all the binding and binded again with the same colors as the background. Now my spiral is floating!!!! Final size: square 15″.

Κατά συνέπεια, ξήλωσα όλο το ρέλι και το ξαναέφτιαξα χρησιμοποιώντας τα ίδια χρώματα με το φόντο. Τώρα η σπείρα μου είναι έτοιμη να φύγει!!!! Τελικό μέγεθος: τετράγωνο πλευράς 40 εκ.

I definitely missed my Oliso iron, since we were at our summer house…..When you get used to leave the iron down, there is a risk if you use another iron……

Οπωσδήποτε μου έλειψε το σιδεράκι μου Oliso, μια και βρισκόμασταν στο εξοχικό μας…. Οταν συνηθίσεις να αφήνεις το σίδερο πάνω στη σιδερώστρα, υπάρχει ένας κίνδυνος με άλλο σίδερο….
