Summer in Greece (famous Greek song of the ’60)…. How many beautiful things! First of all, schools closed for the summer holidays (3 whole months!) Our children left their school books and started reading Goofy and Ariel.

Καλοκαιράκι, καλοκαιράκι….. Και τι δεν έχει η ανταλλαγή μας και αυτό τον μήνα. Πρώτα απόλα το κλείσιμο των σχολείων. Έκλεισαν τα σχολεία και τα παιδάκια άφησαν τα βιβλία τους και έπιασαν τα Μίκυ – Μάους,

as well as other traditional fairy tales.

αλλά και βιβλία με παλιά παραδοσιακά παραμύθια που μίλαγαν για τη γοργόνα και τον Μέγα Αλέξανδρο…

They started counting how many times they are going to swim and how many ice-creams are eating (you see in Greece we eat ice cream almost exclusively during summer).

Άρχισαν να μετράνε τα μπάνια που κάνουν και τα παγωτά που τρώνε

They went on the beaches with their sand toys

Ξεχύθηκαν στις παραλίες με τα κουβαδάκια τους

and made sand castles.

κι έφτιαξαν πύργους στην άμμο.

They pretended they were pirates,

Έπαιξαν τους πειρατές,

they made paper boats and boats out of watermellon

Έφτιαξαν βαρκάκια από χαρτί αλλά και από φέτες καρπουζιού

whereas some of them curved small boats on pine pees and trew them on the sea.

κι άλλα τα σκάλισαν στις φλούδες των πεύκων σαν αρχαία καράβια, έφτιαξαν με κλαράκια και κομμάτια ύφασμα πανιά και τά ‘ριξαν στη θάλασσα,

They gathered sea shells

Μάζεψαν κοχύλια

and starfish,

και αστερίες,

while their moms were lying on the sand reading their books and drinking their coffee

την ώρα που οι μαμάδες τους ήταν ξαπλωμένες πάνω στην άμμο και διάβαζαν το βιβλίο τους και πίνοντας τον καφέ τους

taking also a look at some cranes

χαζεύοντας λίγο πιο κει κάτι γερανούς

and seagulls.

και γλαροπούλια.

and their flip-flops on the sand

άφηναν τις σαγιονάρες τους πάνω στην άμμο

near some crabs

δίπλα σε κάτι καβουράκια

and were swimming back and forth on the crystal clear waters.

και κολυμπούσαν πέρα δώθε στα καταγάλανα νερά.

Their children were following with their scuba masks and were watching the seabed.

Και από κοντά κολυμπούσαν και τα παιδάκια. Έβαζαν τις μάσκες τους κι έβλεπαν τους μαγικούς βυθούς.

They were looking at the fish passing in front of them,

Χάζευαν τα ψάρια που περνούσαν μπροστά τους,

as well as some red lobsters.

αλλά και κάτι κατακόκκινους αστακούς που είχαν εκείνες οι θάλασσες.

All of them was like a fairy tale that at the end the children thought some fishes were wearing colorful scarfs.

Και τόσο παραμυθένια ήταν όλα που μέχρι τα ψάρια τούς φαίνονταν ότι φορούσαν χρωματιστές μπαντάνες.

Some of the fishes were very rare and our children painted them and wrote also their name to take the picture back to school in September (the following pattern is by Irene at www.sugaridoo.com)

Μερικά ψάρια ανήκαν σε σπάνια είδη και τα παιδάκια μας τα ζωγράφισαν  κι έγραψαν και το όνομά τους για να τα δείξουν στο σχολείο το φθινόπωροn (το παρακάτω τετράγωνο έγινε με σχέδιο της Ιρέν από το www.sugaridoo.com)

Apart from the fish, they were finding also anchors on the seabed.

Κι εκτός από ψάρια έβρισκαν και παρατημένες άγκυρες κάτω στον βυθό.

And when they took their head above the water,they were seeing the boats passing by.

Και όταν έβγαζαν το κεφάλι τους από το νερό, έβλεπαν στο βάθος τα καραβάκια να περνούν.

And they were making somersaults in the water. Then they were looking everything going round.

Κι έκαναν και κολοτούμπες μέσα στο νερό και τότε έβλεπαν τα καραβάκια να γυρίζουν.

Somewhere further away, they could see whales and dolphins.

Και πιο μακριά κάποια μπορούσαν να διακρίνουν και φάλαινες αλλά και παιχνιδιάρικα δελφίνια.

There was also an air balloon that passed above their heads once.

Και μια φορά πέρασε πάνω από τα κεφάλια τους κι ένα αερόστατο

 

How nice beaches were the ones our children visited this summer!

Και τι όμορφες παραλίες ήταν αυτές που πήγαιναν τα παιδάκια μας το καλοκαίρι!

At the sunset there were formed big companies of people and children they had barbecues and fun!!

Το σούρουπο στις παραλίες αυτές γίνονταν μεγάλες παρέες και οι άνθρωποι άναβαν φωτιές στην παραλία και έψηναν και γλένταγαν μικροί και μεγάλοι!

When at the night was chilly, our children were putting long trousers and blouses with long sleeves so they can stay with their parents the longest possible.

Κι αν έκανε το βραδάκι ψύχρα, έβαζαν τα παιδάκια μας μακριά παντελόνια και μπλούζες για να μπορούν να μένουν με τους γονείς τους όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερο.

 

When teenage loves were starting, then our older children used to visit a beautiful aquarium

Και οταν άρχιζαν πια και οι εφηβικοί έρωτες, τα πιο μεγάλα παιδιά μας πήγαιναν λίγο πιο ‘κει χέρι χέρι, ραντεβουδάκια, σε ένα καταπληκτικό ενυδρείο

και μετά κάθονταν και ζωγράφιζαν όλες τις καλοκαιρινές εικόνες  που είχαν μαζέψει με τα μάτια της καρδιάς τους για να τις έχουν μαζί τους και όταν τελειώσουν οι διακοπές τους… (το σχέδιο είναι της Ρούμι από http://www.3patchcrafts.blogspot.com/)
