Last challenge for this year. The least interesting for me, because I am not fond of this type of quilts. Medallion quilts. At least the tradional ones. I would also like to mention that Santa Claus is coming in Greece New Year’s eve. This is the reason I chose this day to show you my project.
Τελευταία πρόκληση γι’ αυτή τη χρονιά. Η λιγότερο ενδιαφέρουσα για μένα, γιατί μάλλον δεν τα πολυαγαπώ αυτού του τύπου τα κουιλτς. Τα κουίλτς-μενταγιόν. Τουλάχιστον τα παραδοσιακά. Επίσης να θυμίσω ότι παραδοσιακά στην Ελλάδα, ο Αη Βασίλης έρχεται παραμονή Πρωτοχρονιάς και γι’ αυτό διάλεξα αυτή την ημέρα να ανεβάσω το έργο μου.
A medallion quilt is all about a center block and borders. Few or many.
Όταν μιλάμε για ένα κουίλτ “μενταγιόν”, μιλάμε για ένα κουίλτ που έχει ένα κεντρικό κομμάτι και γύρω του πολλά ή λίγα πλαίσια αυτού του τύπου.
The size of the quilt of this challenge should be at least 36 * 36″. It should be made in any technique and any fabrics we had sent by Island Batik.
Το κουίλτ που μας ζητήθηκε αυτό τον μήνα έπρεπε να έχει μέγεθος περίπου 1 επί 1 μέτρο, και να είναι φτιαγμένο με οποιαδήποτε τεχνική και οποιαδήποτε υφάσματα είχαμε από τα κουτιά που μας είχαν στείλει τα Island Batik.
Therefore, in order to make something I do not like so much, I needed to make it in my own way. And what better than a Christmas quilt! The collection Season’s Splendor, designed by Kathy Engle was delivered to me in my second box.
Για να κάνω λοιπόν κάτι που δεν μου πολυαρέσει, έπρεπε να το φέρω στα μέτρα μου. Και τι καλύτερο από ένα Χριστουγεννιάτικο κουίλτ. Η συλλογή Το Μεγαλείο των Χριστουγέννων (Season’s Splendor) – σχεδιασμένη από την Kathy Engle ήρθε μαζί με τα άλλα περιεχόμενα των κουτιών μου αυτό τον χρόνο.
It was one way path to use this collection in order to make this project. I also used other fabrics from my stash. The dark background was “storm”, whereas the light background was “shark”.
Ήταν μονόδρομος να τη χρησιμοποιήσω γι’ αυτό το έργο. Δεν χρησιμοποίησα όμως μόνο αυτή. Χρησιμοποίησα και άλλα υφάσματα για τα επιμέρους σχέδια. Το σκούρο φόντο ήταν η καταιγίδα (storm) και το ανοιχτό ο καρχαρίας (shark).
For the snow, I used some old white embroidered pillow cases along with the plain white sent to me by Island Batik.It’s quality is top of the top.
Για τα λευκά κομμάτια χρησιμοποίησα κάποιες παλιές κεντημένες μαξιλαροθήκες που είχα και σε κάποια σημεία το μονόχρωμο λευκό των Island Batik, που είναι ό,τι καλύτερο έχω δει σε μονόχρωμο. Και φυσικά χρησιμοποίησα και άλλα μικρά και μεγάλα κομμάτια από τα υπολείμματά μου.
And with this and that, my quilt ended to be supersized. Almost 95″ * 95″. For the central piece, I used Santa and Rudolph pattern by Janeen van Niekerk. Foundation Paper Pieceing is the technique.
Με αυτά και μ’ εκείνα, το πάπλωμα κατέληξε να γίνει υπέρδιπλο, σε διαστάσεις 2,40 επί 2,40 μ. Στο κεντρικό κομμάτι, χρησιμοποιήθηκε ένα σχέδιο της Janeen van Niekerk με τίτλο “Ο Αη Βασίλης και ο Ρούντολφ” (Santa and Rudolph). Η τεχνική του είναι Πάτσουγορκ πάνω σε χαρτί βάσης.
Reinders on the first border were made based on the Flying Santa pattern by Lynette Anderson in needleturn applique and hand embroidery. I had made this runner for a previous challenge. You may see more details here.
Στο πρώτο πλαίσιο οι τάρανδοι έγιναν με βάση τα πατρόν από το σχέδιο “Ιπτάμενος Αη Βασίλης” (Flying Santa) της Lynette Anderson και την τεχνική του γυριστού απλικέ και λεπτομέρειες με κέντημα στο χέρι. Είχα κάνει για κάποια άλλη πρόκληση ένα ράνερ. Μπορείτε να δείτε περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες εδώ.
Houses and trees are designed using the EQ8 and framed my fairytale. Also in Fpp technique.
Σχεδιάστηκαν σπίτια και δέντρα από την αρχή με το Electric Quilt 8 και πλαισίωσαν το παραμύθι, επίσης με την τεχνική του Πάτσγουορκ πάνω σε χαρτί βάσης.
Embroidery designs on the snow were made using my Embroidery machine Husqvarna Viking Brillance 80, as well as the wishes
Τα κεντήματα πάνω στο χιόνι έγιναν με την κεντητική μου μηχανή Husqvarna Viking Brillance 80, όπως και οι ευχές
and the badges that were embroidered and then appliqued on the quilt. All patterns were from Alphalicious Designs site.
και τα προειδοποιητικά στρογγυλά σήματα για τις μάσκες, που κεντήθηκαν ξεχωριστά και απλικαρίστηκαν πάνω στο πάπλωμα. Όλα ήταν σχέδια από τη σελίδα Alphalicious designs.
And since this year comes to an end, I would like to say bye bye with a fairy tale.
Και μια και κλείνει ο χρόνος, αποφάσισα να τον κλείσω με ένα παραμύθι.
Once upon a time, during some Christmas time, Santa had prepared all his presents and was ready to make his trip around the Globe. He was discussing with Rudolph the travel schedule while looking through his workshop window being a little bit nervous.
Μια φορά κι έναν καιρό, κάποια Χριστούγεννα ο Αη Βασίλης είχε ετοιμάσει τα δώρα του και ήταν έτοιμος για το καθιερωμένο του ταξίδι. Συζητούσε με τον Ρούντολφ για το πρόγραμμα του ταξιδιού τους και κοίταζε από το παράθυρο του εργαστηρίου του λίγο ανήσυχος.
All around the workshop, the other reinders were ready to go. Some of them were also flying trying to be in their best shape.
Γύρω από το εργαστήριο οι τάρανδοι ήταν έτοιμοι και κάποιοι μάλιστα έκαναν και δοκιμαστικές πτήσεις μέσα στη νύχτα για να είναι σε φόρμα.
The sleigh was overwhelmed. Presents were allover.
Το έλκηθρο ήταν τόσο φορτωμένο που τα δώρα ξεχείλιζαν από παντού.
But why this nervosity? Looking from some distance, Santa was seeing allover the earth badges and signs saying that everybody, even elves and reinders must wear face masks. A large pandemic had filled the whole planet and face masks were necessary for all to wear.
Όμως γιατί υπήρχε αυτή η ανησυχία; Βλέποντας από μακριά ο Αη Βασίλης, έβλεπε παντού πάνω στη γη σήματα που έλεγαν ότι ακόμα και οι τάρανδοι και τα ξωτικά έπρεπε να φορούν μάσκες. Μια μεγάλη πανδημία είχε κατακλύσει όλο τον πλανήτη και οι μάσκες ήταν απαραίτητες.
They all put their masks on and started their journey. They arrived on earth – Greece specifically- just on time. New Year’s Eve. All streets were empty but full of snow. As well as the house yards. Nobody was outside because there was a restriction after 10 o’ clock in Greece, because of the corona-virus. However every house had put their Christmas trees outside along with garlands so that the Santa knows where to stop his sleigh.
Τι να κάνουν λοιπόν. Φόρεσαν τις μάσκες τους όλοι και ξεκίνησαν το ταξίδι τους. Έφτασαν στη γη και βρήκαν άδειους τους δρόμους και τις χιονισμένες αυλές των σπιτιών. Οι κάτοικοι ήταν όλοι κλεισμένοι στα σπίτια τους και γιόρταζαν με τους πολύ δικούς τους ανθρώπους, μια και η κυκλοφορία σταματούσε στις 10 το βράδυ εξ αιτίας του κορονοϊού. Είχαν όμως στολίσει τα δέντρα στις αυλές τους και είχαν κρεμάσει και χρωματιστές γιρλάντες για να τις δει ο Αη Βασίλης και να ξέρει πού να παρκάρει το έλκηθρό του.
And he was seeing them and was leaving his presents. You see, he was not allowed to enter not even through the chiminey this year….What a peculiar holiday season was that!
Κι εκείνος πράγματι τις έβλεπε και πήγαινε και άφηνε τα δώρα του εκεί. Ούτε από την καμινάδα δεν επιτρεπόταν να μπει….. Τι στενάχωρες γιορτές ήταν αυτές!
But wait! Look at this corner. A truck was dragging a 2020, ugly and worn. It was taking it to throw it away.
Όμως σταθείτε! Σε μια γωνιά ένα φορτηγάκι έσερνε πια το ταλαιπωρημένο 2020 να το πάει να το πετάξει. Να φύγει μακριά.
And it was bringing a shiny and joyfull 2021. Full of hope for a better world. Happy, full of health and love.
Κι έφερνε με χαρές και πανηγύρια το 2021. Με την ελπίδα ο κόσμος να γίνει καλύτερος. Χαρούμενος, γεμάτος υγεία και αγάπη.
This was my medallion quilt.
Αυτό ήταν το πάπλωμα “μενταγιόν” μου.
It will be given to our youngest grand child, George, who during this lockdown was with us every day to learn his lessons and who was helping me to put houses and trees in the order he liked. And who was trying all my Epic’s stitches so that he could be with me while I was working, after having done his lessons. Our first grade boy who did not have even the time to understand what real school is. This year will be remembered. By all of us. A little bit more by him through his quilt and maybe this post.
Είναι το πάπλωμα του Γιώργη μας που όλο αυτό το διάστημα ερχόταν και έκανε στο σπίτι μας τα μαθήματά του και με βοηθούσε να βάλουμε τα δέντρα και τα σπίτια στη σειρά που του άρεσε. Και που έραβε μαζί μου δοκιμάζοντας όλες τις βελονιές της μεγάλης μου μηχανής. Το πρωτάκι μας που δεν κατάλαβε καλά – καλά τι σημαίνει σχολείο. Θα τη θυμόμαστε όλοι αυτή τη χρονιά. Κι εκείνος λίγο περισσότερο μέσα από το πάπλωμά του και ίσως αυτή την ανάρτηση.
I am so sorry that I did not have the time to quilt it. I also wanted to add a few ornaments on the houses. I did not want to make something in a hurry so that it finishes on time. This quilt deserves the best. But I promise I will post again about it as soon as I finish it.
Λυπάμαι τόσο πολύ που δεν πρόλαβα να το καπιτονάρω. Ήθελα να βάλω και μερικά στολίδια ακόμα στα σπίτια, αλλά δεν πρόλαβα επίσης. Δεν ήθελα να κάνω κάτι βιαστικό ίσα ίσα για να το τελειώσω. Του αξίζουν τα καλύτερα. Δεσμεύομαι όμως να σας το ξαναδείξω όταν τελειώσει οριστικά.
I am sorry for this huge post. Closing it, last for this year, I wanted to thank once more Island Batik for one more year full of challenges that took a lot of my time but also pushed my boundaries. Mania, my mouth has fallen open (as you have done to me more than once in the past!) with this incredible massive quilt that has so much meaning. I will be watching for the finish. I love the photo of your grandson sewing on the machine. It certainly has been a year to remember forever, and you’ve captured the strangeness (masks), the pain (broken 2020) but hope and magic that still abound if we but look for it.

Mania ~ Your quilt is so beautiful! You put so much work into it. I love the vintage pillow cases, and the embroidery and that center paper pieced block looks like it has so many pieces. Your fairytale made me cry. What a perfect ending to 2020.
