“What in nature inspires you: flowers, insects, animals, trees, the ocean, the sky? There are so many places to find the inspiration you need for this challenge!” That was the challenge of this month. We had to make a quilt of size 36″ x 36″ or larger using ay technique with the surprise fabrics of my second box sent to me by my favorite Island Batik fabrics.

Τα υφάσματα – έκπληξη είναι η συλλογή Οχανά, σχεδιασμένα από την Κάθυ Ενγκλ. Ακριβώς τα χρώματά μου
The first thing I did when I received this collection was to look for the meaning of the collection’s name. According to Wikipedia, “Ohana” means family in Hawai, in an extended sense of the term, including blood-related, adoptive or intentional. The term is cognate with Māori kōhanga, meaning “nest”. The root word ʻohā refers to the root or corm of the kalo, or taro plant (the staple “staff of life” in Hawaii), which Hawaian natives consider to be their cosmological ancestor.
Το πρώτο πράγμα που έκανα όταν παρέλαβα αυτή τη συλλογή ήταν να κοιτάξω τι σημαίνει το όνομά της. Σύμφωνα λοιπόν με τη Βικιπαίδεια, Οχανά στη γλώσσα της Χαβάης σημαίνει οικογένεια, με την ευρεία της έννοια. Η λέξη αυτή είναι συγγνής με τη λέξη των Μαορί kōhanga, που σημαίνει “φωλιά”. Η ρίζα της λέξης ʻohā αναφέρεται στη ρίζα ή τον βολβό του φυτού kalo ή taro που είναι κυρίαρχο φυτό στη Χαβάη και το οποίο οι αυτόχθονες κάτοικοι το θερωρούν κοσμικό τους πρόγονο. Δεντρόφυλλο ή Φυλλόδεντρο το λέμε εμείς.
The term also references a theme in Disney’s 2002 film, Lilo & Stitch, and throughout its franchise (“ʻOhana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind—or forgotten.”). Whoever has a kid, should be familiar with the term. Anyway, back to our challenge.
Η λέξη Οχανά υπάρχει και σε μια ταινία του Ντίσνεϊ του 2002, Λίλο και Στιτς που όσοι έχετε παιδιά, σιγουρα θα τη ξέρετε. Υπάρχει ένα τραγουδάκι που λέει: Οχανά σημαίνει οικογένεια. Οικογένεια σημαίνει ότι κανείς δεν μένει μόνος και ξεχασμένος… Και μετά απόλα αυτά, πάμε πίσω στην πρόκλησή μας.
Ohana, family, nature, I love cacti, what else than a cacti family! The size of my project is 28″ x 42″. A little smaller than I wanted it to be but I messed up while trimming it. I know… I am not a newbie. On the contrary. However…..
Οχανά, οικογένεια, φύση, εγώ που αγαπάω τους κάκτους, τι άλλο λοιπόν από μια οικογένεια κάκτων. Το μέγεθος του έργου μου είναι 75 επί 105 εκ. περίπου και αυτό γιατί το πετσόκοψα προσπαθώντας να το ισιώσω. Τέτοια κασκαρίκα που έπαθα, σαν να μην είχα ξανα ισιώσει έργο…..
I used pieces of every fabric of the collection. I free motion appliqued while quilting in row edges using black Aurifil thread in order to give the idea of a colored sketch. I quilted pebbles in the pot and in parallel lines the pot in order to get the relief of a basket. Of course, I used another goodie of my box, the batting, sent to me by Hobbs.
Χρησιμοποίησα όλα τα; υφάσματα της συλλογής. Απλικάρισα τα σχήματα καπιτονάροντάς τα ταυτόχρονα με ελεύθερη κίνηση, χρησιμοποιώντας μαύρη κλωστή Aurifil για να δώσω την αίσθηση ενός ζωγραφισμένου σκίτσου. Καπιτονάρισα βοτσαλάκια μέσα στη γλάστα, στη θέση του χώματος και μετά οριζόντες γραμμές στη γλάστρα για να δημιουργήσω ένα ανάγλυφο που να θυμίζει καλάθι. Φυσικά η βάτα που χρησιμοποίησα ήταν και αυτή μεσα στο κουτί μου σταλμένη από τη Hobbs.
I thread-painted a little bit / Εκανα και λίγη ζωγραφική με την κλωστή μου
I left the background unquilted, but I might quilt it too in the future. This is the reason that I did not bind it because I might use it to make something bigger. In any case, I loved my cacti a lot!
Άφησα χωρίς καπιτονάρισμα το φόντο, αλλά μπορεί να το καπιτονάρω και αυτό στο μέλλον. Αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που δεν το ρέλιασα, γιατί σκέφτομαι μήπως το κάνω μεγαλύτερο στο μέλλον. Σε κάθε περίπτωση τους λάτρεψα τους κάκτους μου!

That is stunning. I’ve just finished a quilt top and I’m going to lose just about every point on the edge – I really don’t know how and like you I’m not really a newbie at this 😦
