Almost 40 days after my previous post! Time flies! 40 days at home and the only thing i finished from the ones I had planned is this quilt. So many projects, old and new in my mind. I am still trying to put an order….

40 μέρες μετά την προηγούμενη ανάρτηση!!!! Πόσος χρόνος πέρασε με τα βιντεάκια της Marmalena και ούτε που το κατάλαβα. 40 μέρες στο σπίτι και ακόμα δεν έχω κάνει παρά μόνο αυτό το πάπλωμα που θα σας δείξω σήμερα, από όλα όσα υπολόγιζα ότι θα έκανα…. Στο μυαλό μου καινούργια και παλιά έργα στήνουν χορό κι εγώ προσπαθώ να βάλω μια τάξη.

This is the 3rd year as Island Batik Ambassador and the first time that I did not meet the deadline. The lockdown, the moving of all things to deal with to home, the setting up of the sewing room, the work I had inbetween, the almost 300 masks I sewed, my schedule was blown up. Therefore, it is only yesterday I finished the quilting of this project and only today that I can write this post.

Για πρώτη φορά στα 3 χρόνια που μετέχω στο Πρόγραμμα των Πρεσβευτών των Island Batik, δεν ήμουν συνεπής. Το κλείσιμο του μαγαζιού, η μετακόμιση στο σπίτι όλων αυτών που σκόπευα να φτιάξω, η αναδιάρθωση του εργαστηρίου, η δουλειά που προέκυψε, τα βιντεάκια, οι περίπου 300 μάσκες που ράφτηκαν, μου τίναξαν το πρόγραμμα στον αέρα. Κι έτσι έφτασα μόλις σήμερα να κάνω την ανάρτηση του Μαρτίου, μια και χτές τελείωσα το καπιτονάρισμα του παπλώματος.

March challenge was a quilt made with Accuquilt Block On Board Dies. I do not know if you are familiar with those dies. Each die cuts a whole block. When I was aware of this challenge I contacted Island Batik to ask if I could have Double Wedding Ring Die. At the end of this year we have our 40th wedding anniversary. On top of it imagine that I have no quilt for my bed except for my sampler Christmas quilt. All quilts I have made have been given away….. Accuquilt said yes and it was the right time to sew my own quilt.

Η πρόκληση του Μαρτίου έπρεπε να είναι ένα πάπλωμα που να έχει γίνει με τις ειδικές κοπτικές μήτρες του Accuquilt (AccuQuilt Block On Board Dies), όπου η κάθε μήτρα κόβει ένα ολόκληρο σχέδιο. Όταν το διάβασα, επικοινώνησα μαζί τους και ζήτησα, αν είναι δυνατόν, να έχω τη μήτρα που βγάζει το Double Wedding Ring. Στο τέλος της χρονιάς κλείνουμε 40 χρόνια γάμου και από την άλλη, φανταστείτε ότι δεν έχω ούτε ένα πάπλωμα δικό μου, εκτός από ένα Χριστουγεννιάτικο. Όσα έχω φτιάξει, τα έχω δώσει……. Η εταιρεία συμφώνησε και έτσι είχε έρθει η ώρα για το δικό μου πάπλωμα.

First of all let me tell you a few things about the pattern. It is of course based on two rings. Specifically on gimmal or gimmel or joint rings, thus two similar interlocking rings that were worn by an engaged couple in the old times. When the marriage was taking place then the two rings were worn by the bride. They were firstly appeared in Central Europe during 14th century, but became trendy in 16th and 17th century.

Να σας πω πρώτα δυο λόγια για το σχέδιο. Έχει τη βάση του στα δαχτυλίδια αρραβώνων, όπως τα παρακάτω που λέγονταν gimmal ή gimmel ή joint rings. Δηλαδή δυο δίδυμα δαχτυλίδια που φορούσαν από ένα οι αρραβωνιασμένοι, και όταν γινόταν ο γάμος, τα δυο αυτά δαχτυλίδια ενώνονταν σε ένα και τα φορούσε η σύζυγος. Ήδη εμφανίζονται τον 14ο αιώνα, ενώ είναι πολύ της μόδας στην Κεντρική Ευρώπη τoν 16ο και 17ο αιώνα.

In the States, the first written evidence about this pattern is around 1920. This quilt became a nice gift for couples to be married, as it would bring good lack, nice dreams and eternal love. However there is also a myth around it. There was a granny during the Civil War who was quilting a lot. Her grand daughter was engaged to a soldier who was wounded and left to the hospital for a long time. The marriage was postponed. When he came back, there were no wedding rings to get married. Then the granny made the double wedding ring quilt for them that was the substitute for their rings.

Το πρώτο δείγμα αυτού του παπλώματος στην Αμερική φαίνεται ότι χρονολογείται γύρω στο 1920. Ήταν ένα καλό δώρο για νεόνυμφους, μια και θα τους εξασφάλιζε καλή τύχη στο γάμο τους, όμορφα όνειρα και αιώνια αγάπη. Ωστόσο, υπάρχει και μύθος και γύρω από αυτό το σχέδιο. Λέγεται ότι υπήρχε μια γιαγιά που έφτιαχνε πολλά παπλώματα κατά τη διάρκεια του Εμφυλίου της Αμερικής. Η εγγονή της ήταν αρραβωνιασμένη με έναν στρατιώτη που πληγώθηκε στον πόλεμο και έμεινε μακριά από την καλή του για πολύ καιρό, με αποτέλεσμα να αναβληθεί ο γάμος. Όταν γύρισε, θέλησαν να παντρευτούν, αλλά δεν είχαν βέρες. Και τότε η γιαγιά τούς έδωσε ένα πάπλωμα με αυτό το σχέδιο που αντικατέστησε τις βέρες τους.

Our challenge was asking for a quilt 45 * 60″. Of course I made it almost king size, since it mented to be ours. I used for the background the batter, that was sent to me by my favorite Island Batik. I also used as many red or redish colores they have sent me. I also bought fabric twice, because there are so many pieces in this pattern that make them a fabric eater. However bare in mind that the BOB Dies are ideal for you to take advantage of your stash, since those block’s patterns are scrapbusters. I also made it, as you see, using as many reds and redish Island Batik fabrics I could find. Why red? Because I read somewhere that ruby is the stone of 40th anniversaty.

Οι οδηγίες που είχαμε για τον μήνα αυτό ήταν να κάνουμε ένα πάπλωμα μεγέθους τουλάχιστον 1,20 επί 1,50 μ. Όμως μια και το προόριζα για μας, φυσικά το έκανα διπλό. Εκτός από το καταπληκτικό χρώμα που χρησιμοποίησα στο φόντο και μου είχαν στείλει τα αγαπημένα μου Island Batik και είναι το batter, χρησιμοποίησα όσα υφάσματα κόκκινα ή κοκκινωπά που είχαν στείλει, αλλά χρειάστηκε να αγοράσω υφασματα ακόμα 2 φορές. Το σχέδιο αυτό έχει τόσα κομμάτια που τρώει πολύ ύφασμα. Βέβαια έχετε κατά νου ότι αυτό το σχέδιο, όπως και όλα τα αντίστοιχα κοπτικά που βγάζουν ένα ολοκληρο σχέδιο, είναι ιδανικά για να αξιοποιείτε τα υπολείμματά σας. Κι εγώ το έκανα με όσα διαφορετικά κόκκινα βρήκα. Γιατί όμως εγώ κόκκινο; Γιατί κάπου διάβασα ότι το ρουμπίνι είναι η πέτρα της επετείου των 40 χρόνων.

This pattern can be done in many ways, paper piecing, FPP…… But the easiest way is the Accuquilt way. If I hadn’t Accuquilt I would not even imagine doing this pattern. Think of all those curves to be cut and then sewed…..

Το σχέδιο αυτό γίνεται με πολλούς τρόπους. Με το χέρι, με χαρτί… Όμως ο ευκολότερος είναι με το Accuquilt. Γι’ αυτό αν θέλετε κι εσείς να κάνετε ένα τέτοιο πάπλωμα, μη διστάσετε να επικοινωνήσετε μαζί μου να σας το κόψω. Γιατί κι εγώ, αν δεν είχα το Ακιουκουίλτ, δεν υπήρχε περίπτωση να το φτιάξω με τίποτα. Φανταστείτε πόσες καμπύλες έπρεπε να κοπούν και να ραφτούν….

After having cut the pieces, the whole process is a piece of cake. Because as you can see on the above picture, the cutting process also leaves ear dogs, that help you a lot while joining the pieces. Seam allowance is also included. On top of that, each piece has a letter so that you can join them according to those letters. To be honnest, the joining process is time consuming because of the quantity of the pieces but is also a piece of cake, because of all those facilities.

Η δουλειά από εκεί και μετά είναι παιχνιδάκι. Γιατί όπως βλέπετε στην παραπάνω φωτογραφία, το κοπτικό δημιουργεί και μικρές κόντρες (σημάδια) που σας βοηθούν μετά πολύ στο ράψιμο, μια και ταιριάζοντας τις κόντρες, ταιριάζετε εύκολα τα κομμάτια σας. Επίσης, έχει συνυπολογιστεί και το περιθώριο ραφής,που είναι 1/4″. Χρονοβόρα μεν διαδικασία γιατί τα κομμάτια είναι πολλά αλλά γίνεται και παιχνιδάκι μια και το κάθε κομμάτι έχει ένα γράμμα και η συναρμολόγηση γίνεται με βάση τα γράμματα αυτά. Και φυσικά τα ζευγάρια ενώθηκαν χωρίς να σηκώνεται το ποδαράκι, απλά βάζοντάς τα το ένα πίσω από το άλλο.

This time my good friend Miroula helped me to piece the pieces. We made 40 rings. As many as the years of the marriage. I designed the quilt so that 38 rings are all placed around in a symmetrical placement and 2 of them were put in the center with our initials. When arrives the day of the anniversary I will add the dates by hand. The final size? Huge: 7.90 * 7.90 feet

Αυτή τη φορά με βοήθησε το ξωτικό Μοιρούλα και το πάπλωμα συναρμολογήθηκε όσο πιο γρήγορα γινόταν. Φτιάχτηκαν 40 κύκλοι, όσο και τα χρόνια του γάμου μας. Σχεδίασα το πάπλωμα έτσι, ώστε οι 38 να τοποθετηθούν συμμετρικά γύρω- γύρω και κράτησα και άλλους 2 για να τοποθετηθούν στο κέντρο με τα αρχικά μας. Όταν έρθει η ημέρα της επετείου θα συμπληρώσω και τις ημερομηνίες. Το τελικό μέγεθος; Τεράστιο: 2,40 επί 2,40 μ.

I embroidered the initials on my favorite Sewing machine, Husqvarna Brillance 80. It is also selfunderstanding that I used Schmetz needles throughout as usual.

Τα αρχικά τα κέντησα με την επίσης αγαπημένη μου μηχανή, τη Brillance 80 της Husqvarna. Εννοείται ότι σε όλη διαδικασία χρησιμοποίησα τις βελόνες Schmetz που δεν αλλάζω με τίποτα, όπως σας έχω πει επανειλημμένως.

I wanted our quilt to be thick so I used a thick batting. I quilted only in the ditch in and out around the rings. It became soooo nice!

Επειδή το ήθελα ζεστό και κάπως πιο χοντρό χρησιμοποίησα μια πιο χοντρή βάτα. Το καπιτονάρισα αποκλειστικά και μόνο γύρω από τα δαχτυλίδια (και την έξω και τη μέσα μεριά). Αυτό του έδωσε ένα πολύ όμορφο ανάγλυφο.

I am so happy about it! It is one of the most beautiful quilts I have ever made and for this I should thank in particular Accuquilt as well as Island Batik for the beautiful fabrics.

Εχω ξετρελλαθεί. Είναι από τα πιο όμορφα παπλώματα που έχω φτιάξει και γι’ αυτό νομίζω πρέπει να ευχαριστήσω ιδιαίτερα την Accuquilt αλλά και τα Island Batik για τα πανέμορφα υφάσματα.

Now that I see it again, I could also use it for this month’s challenge (Borders and Binding) LOL, I am kidding. I have already planned this month’s project, that I am going to make after Orthodox Easter, that comes in two days time.

Και τώρα που το βλέπω, θα μπορούσε να χρησιμοποιηθεί και για την πρόκληση αυτού του μήνα που είναι τα πλαίσια και τα τελειώματα. Φυσικά αστειεύομαι, γιατί ήδη έχω σκεφτεί το επόμενο που θα το ξεκινήσω αμέσως μετά το Πάσχα.
