Once upon a time, there was a good fairy who was flying above the country and the woods. On one of her trips, she saw an abandoned mushroom house. Nobody knew whom this house belonged to. The fairy could understand that the house was very beautiful but had almost disapeared under so many climging plants. One could not see nor its windows neither its door. Only despair could someone feel, when looking at the mushroom house.

Μια φορά κι έναν καιρό ήταν μια καλή νεράιδα που πετούσε πάνω από τα δάση και τις εξοχές. Σε ένα της ταξίδι, κοιτάει κάτω και τι να δει! Ένα μανιταρόσπιτο εγκαταλειμμένο απ’ όλους κι απ’ όλα. Γιατί δεν ξέρουμε ποιοι ζούσαν σε αυτό. Είδε όμως η νεράιδα ότι το μανιταρόσπιτο αυτό ήταν πολύ όμορφο, αλλά ήταν πνιγμένο στις περικοκλάδες Σε τέτοιο σημείο που ούτε η πόρτα ούτε τα παράθυρά του φαινόντουσαν. Μόνο εγκατάλειψη και απελπισία έβγαζε η εικόνα του.

At that very night, our fairy saw a dream. She saw the mushroom house on a beautiful hill, full of birds, amazing flowers and some garden tools. And she immediately realized what she had to do.

Το βράδυ που κοιμήθηκε είδε ένα όνειρο. Είδε το μανιταρόσπιτο πάνω σε έναν όμορφο λόφο, με πουλιά, όμορφα λουλούδια και μερικά εργαλεία. Και αμέσως κατάλαβε τι έπρεπε να κάνει.

First of all, she called her friends, the birds. They gathered at once around her and started twitting. They were asking what they could do for her. And she told them: “Fly wherever you like and bring back seedlings. Seedlings from flowers, mushrooms, whatever you think it will be good”. And the birds flew away.

Πρώτα απ’όλα φώναξε τους φίλους της τα πουλιά. Αυτά μαζεύτηκαν αμέσως και άρχισαν να τιτιβίζουν. Τη ρωτούσαν τι μπορούσαν να κάνουν για εκείνη. Κι εκείνη τους είπε: “Τρέξετε όπου μπορείτε και βρείτε σποράκια. Σποράκια λουλουδιών, μανιταριών, ό,τι νομίζετε”. Και πέταξαν τα πουλάκια.

Then the fairy found a gnome in the garden. It was a decorative gnome. She gave him a sweet kiss and our gnome came into life. The fairy told him her dream and the gnome gathered all his garden tools, took out the rust and oiled them, put on his garden boots and started working.

Μετά η νεράιδα βρήκε ένα νανάκι μέσα στον παρατημένο κήπο, από αυτά που βάζουμε για διακόσμηση. Του έδωσε ένα γλυκό φιλί και το νανάκι ζωντάνεψε. Η νεράιδα του διηγήθηκε το όνειρό της και το νανάκι μας αμέσως μάζεψε τα εργαλεία του. Φούσκωσε τη ρόδα στο καρότσι, ξεσκούριασε και λάδωσε τα εργαλεία, φόρεσε και τις μπότες του κι έπιασε αμέσως δουλειά.

Of course, I believe that he also had many helpers. I can understand if I see how many tools are on the quilt. They were only hidding from us…

Βέβαια, εγώ πιστεύω ότι είχε κι άλλους βοηθούς, μια και αν δείτε το πάπλωμα υπήρχαν τόσα πολλά εργαλεία! Μόνο που κρύβονταν για να μην τους δούμε!

The gnome pooled all the weeds and started digging. Birds brought as many seedlings as they could find and let them where the gnomes were digging.

Ξεχορτάριασαν τον κήπο και άρχισαν να σκάβουν. Τα πουλάκια έφεραν όσα σποράκια βρήκαν και τα άφησαν εκεί που έσκαβαν τα νανάκια.

Then the fairy whispered in the air three wishes for the new plants. To grow, to bring life and hope again on this place.

Τότε η νεράιδα σκόρπισε στον αέρα τρεις ευχές για τα καινούργια φυτά. Να μεγαλώσουν, να ζήσουν και να φέρουν την ελπίδα πάλι στον τόπο εκείνο.

And the wishes became truth. A lot of grass sprung all over,

Και πράγματι, ξεπετάχτηκε πολύ γκαζόν,

along with many flowers around the mushroom house and the gnome was cutting them and putting them in vases and watering cans trying to decorate the house in order to welcome the new tennants. Birds were also helping!

ενώ και λουλούδια φύτρωσαν γύρω από το μανιταρόσπιτο και ο νάνος τα έκοβε και τα έβαζε σε βάζα και ποτιστήρια για να στολίσει το σπιτάκι και να υποδεχτεί τους καινούργιους του ενοίκους. Και τον βοηθούσαν και τα πουλάκια σε αυτό!

Even bigger eadible mushrooms were growing under the shadows, where there was humidity and the little birds had spread the mushroom seeds.

Ακόμα και μεγάλα μανιτάρια που μπορούσαν να φαγωθούν γέμιζαν τις υγρές και σκιερές γωνιές του κήπου, εκεί που τα πουλάκια είχαν ρίξει τους μανιταρόσπορους.

The fairy looked at the house very pleased. Her dream had came truth. The mushroom house became as beautiful as a doohouse. Above it two birds were hanging a pannel with the word HOPE in Greek, because it was obvious that the hope had returned to this place. The only thing to wait for, was the tennants…

Η νεράιδα κοίταξε ευχαριστημένη το σπιτάκι. Το όνειρό της είχε γίνει πραγματικότητα. Το μανιταρόσπιτο είχε γίνει κουκλίστικο. Δυο πουλάκια κρατούσαν από πάνω του ένα πανό που έγραφε τη λέξη ΕΛΠΙΔΑ, γιατί πραγματικά η ελπίδα είχε ξαναγυρίσει στον τόπο αυτό. Το μόνο που έμενε ήταν να ξαναγυρίσουν και οι κάτοικοί του…

And then our good fairy went along with the gnome and the birds to other neighborhoods to look for other abandoned places to also make them beautiful. And they lived happily ever after.

Και τότε πια, η καλή μας νεράιδα, πήρε παρέα της το νανάκι και τα πουλάκια και πήγαν σε άλλες γειτονιές να ψάξουν για άλλες παρατημένες εξοχές, να τις ομορφύνουν κι εκείνες. Και ζήσαν αυτοί καλά κι εμείς καλύτερα!

And I was not able to write this story, if my favorite Island Batik had not sent me this amazing collection named Seedlings. It was in my surprise package back in January and you may find them in the shops next month. It is selfunderstanding that I used all the fabrics of this collection!

Κι εγώ δεν θα έγραφα αυτή την ιστορία, αν τα αγαπημένα Island Batik δεν μου είχαν στείλει μέσα στο πακέτο έκπληξη που είχα τον Ιανουάριο, αυτή την καταπληκτική συλλογή που θα βγεί στην αγορά τον Σεπτέμβριο. Seedlings, δηλαδή σποράκια το όνομά της. Εννοείται ότι χρησιμοποίησα όλα τα υφάσματα της συλλογής αυτής!

I designed the background based on a single size quilt that my friend Sandra had designed. I used many rectangles of various sizes, keeping the most light fabrics to tell my story.

Σχεδίασα το φόντο, βασιζόμενη σε ένα μονό πάπλωμα που είχε σχεδιάσει η φίλη μου η Σάντρα. Εφτιαξα ορθογώνια σχήματα διαφόρων μεγεθών, κρατώντας τα πιο ανοιχτόχρωμα για τα τετράγωνα που θα διηγούνται την ιστορία μου.

Ι then designed the pieces to tell my story. The techniques that I used were various:

Και μετά σχεδίασα τα κομμάτια που θα έλεγαν την ιστορία μου. Οι τεχνικές που χρησιμοποίησα πολλές και διάφορες:

Needleturn hand applique (mainly for the birds, the watering can etc)

Απλικέ γυριστό που το έκανα στο χέρι (κυρίως στα πουλάκια αλλά και στο ποτιστήρι και αλλού)

Machine embroidery for the climbing plants in my favorite Husqvarna Designer Jade 35

Κέντημα στη μηχανή για τις άγριες περικοκλάδες, με την αγαπημένη μου Husqvarna Designer Jade 35

Raw edge free motion applique for the letters, the tools, the plant pots and satin stitch for the mushroom houses.

Απλικέ με ελεύθερες άκρες, στα γράμματα,τα εργαλεία και τις γλάστρες με ελεύθερο στερέωμα και με πλακέ για τα μανιταρόσπιτα.

Hand embroidery for the flowers, even machine thread painting for the path.

Κέντημα στο χέρι για τα λουλούδια, αλλά και ζωγραφική με κλωστή (thread painting) για το μονοπάτι (επίσης στη μηχανή).

Mainly stitch in the ditch quilting. I hand finished the binding. Strange for me, but this it is.

Καπιτονάρισμα κυρίως μέσα στις ραφές και γύρω από κάποια σχήματα. Το ρέλιασμα το τελείωσα στο χέρι.Περίεργο για μένα, αλλά έτσι το έκανα.

So, I made a whole queen size quilt (87″ * 90″)

Έφτιαξα λοιπόν ένα ολόκληρο διπλό πάπλωμα μεγέθους 220 επί 230 εκ.

and I used Natural cotton batting σε λευκό χρώμα that was sent to me by Hobbs in my last box.

και χρησιμοποίησα τη βάτα Natural cotton batting σε λευκό χρώμα που μου έστειλε η Hobbs στο τελευταίο πακέτο.

Obviousely I forgot to mention that I added some shadows with my pencils on the mushrooms, the tools etc. I did this after the quilting, as you can see on the mushrooms that by the way are my favorite block on this quilt, since I love the elongated figures. You may see below before and after. I had applique the mushrooms cups, whereas I freehanded sewed the contours of the rest of them, using anyway interfacing.

Και μάλλον ξέχασα να σας πω ότι πρόσθεσα με τα μολύβια μου και σκιές στα μανιτάρια, τα εργαλεία, τις γλάστρες και όπου αλλού έκρινα ότι χρειαζόταν. Αυτό το έκανα μετά το καπιτονάρισμα, όπως βλέπετε στα μανιτάρια, που παρεμπιπτόντως είναι το πιο αγαπημένο μου στοιχείο σε αυτό το πάπλωμα. Λατρεύω τις ψιλόλιγνες φόρμες. Παρακάτω βλέπετε το πριν και το μετά. Στα κεφάλια ων μανιταριών είχα βάλει ύφασμα ενώ στα κοτσάνια τους είχα μόνο κάνει το περίγραμμα με ελεύθερη κίνηση,χρησιμοποιώντας όμως οπωσδήποτε ενισχυτικό κεντήματος από κάτω.

I am very proud of this quilt, because of the variety of the techniques used!

Είμαι πολύ περήφανη γι αυτό το πάπλωμα, ακριβώς γιατί χρησιμοποίησα τόσο πολλές τεχνικές!

And since I was so pleased by this quilt, I thought of giving you some of my scraps of previous collections, because I want to keep every piece of this one. Unfortunately I will be able to add a photo of them as soon as I get back to Athens. In the meantime you may leave a comment below and follow my blog till the 8th of september included. Και μια και χάρηκα τόσο πoλύ με αυτό το πάπλωμα και επειδή δεν μπορώ να αποχωριστώ ό,τι έμεινε από τα συγκεκριμένα υφάσματα, λέω να σας δώσω διάφορα κομμάτια από άλλα υφάσματα πάντα από τα αγαπημένα Island Batik.
