Ντάννυ Αμαζόνας – Danny Amazonas

I knew the work of Danny Amazonas while surfing on the net. I was attracted at first sight because of the bright colors and the beautiful fabrics he uses. As I was not able to get any piece of information apart his page on Facebook, I contacted him during the summer. He was kind enough to send me a few details about himself. Efharisto Danny!

Τη δουλειά του Ντάννυ Αμαζόνας τη συνάντησα περιδιαβαίνοντας στο Διαδίκτυο και από την πρώτη στιγμή κέρδισε το ενδιαφέρον μου. Τα ζωντανά χρώματα αλλά και τα υφάσματα που χρησιμοποιεί ήταν μεγάλος μαγνήτης για τα μάτια μου. Δεν μπορούσα όμως να βρω πληροφορίες για τον ίδιο μια και μόνο η σελίδα του στο Facebook υπήρχε κι έτσι επικοινώνησα μαζί του το καλοκαίρι. Είχε λοιπόν την ευγένεια να μου πει δυο – τρία πράγματα για τον εαυτό του και τον ευχαριστώ πολύ γι’ αυτό.

Dropped out of art school to run a business, below Amazonas was the name of a flower business he owned in New York City in 1972 , those days flower business mostly run by Greek people so he was treated as a “συμπατριώτης“ compatriot, the name stuck ever since. You may see him working on a project

Ο Ντάννυ Αμαζόνας άφησε τη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών για να γίνει επιχειρηματίας. Το όνομα Αμαζόνας ήταν το όνομα ενός λουλουδάδικου που είχε στη Νέα Υόρκη το 1972. Τον καιρό εκείνο, όπως μου έγραψε, τα περισσότερα λουλουδάδικα τα είχαν Έλληνες κι έτσι τον αντιμετώπιζαν ως “συμπατριώτη” (ναι έγραψε τη λέξη στα Ελληνικά – τι έκπληξη!). He was born a Formosan (Taiwanese not Chinese) now he lives in Kaohsiung Taiwan where he creates most of his new works. He likes to work with mosaic of everything from tiles, wood, stone and fabrics any material with colors and shades, started as a pastime in early 1980s, later was infatuated with fabric; Xavi–earlier work of fabric mosaic, seam hidden, no batting, unorthodox method can never qualify for quilting contest or exhibit so he was told.

Γεννήθηκε στην τότε Φορμόζα (Ταϊβάν) και τώρα ζει στην πόλη Kaoshiung της Ταϊβάν, όπου δημιουργεί σχεδόν όλα τα έργα του. Του αρέσει να δουλεύει έργα-μωσαϊκά είτε με πλακάκια, ξύλα, πέτρες και οπωσδήποτε υφάσματα, γενικά οποιοδήποτε υλικό με χρώματα και σκιάσεις. Ξεκίνησε το 1980 να δημιουργεί στον ελεύθερο χρόνο του και σύντομα ξετρελάθηκε με το ύφασμα. Το παρακάτω έργο του – Xavi- είναι από την εποχή που δούλευε το μωσαϊκό με ύφασμα. Τα κομμάτια είναι ενωμένα και οι ραφές κρυμμένες. Δε χρησιμοποίησε βάτα και γενικά ο τρόπος δουλειάς του ήταν ανορθόδοξος για να μπορέσει να εκθέσει σε κάποια έκθεση, όπως του είπαν εκ των υστέρων.

Inspired by Photorealistic artist Chuck Close and pioneered fabric mosaic, has never learned quilting, taught himself to sew with machine instead of glue. To seek continuity he’s innovated and transformed his technique from mosaic to Freehand Patchwork-paint with fabric, with thousands of fabric has collected in his stash over the years;

Πηγή έμπνευσής του ήταν ο Chuck Close ζωγράφος/φωτογράφος που έγινε γνωστός για τα φωτο-ρεαλιστικά γιγάντια πορτραίτα του, πρωτοπόρος στα μωσαϊκά με ύφασμα. Ο Ντάννυ δεν έμαθε ποτέ να κάνει quilting, παρά ήταν αυτοδίδακτος στο να κάνει τα έργα του χρησιμοποιώντας τη ραπτομηχανή αντί για την κόλλα. Στη συνέχεια, άλλαξε την τεχνική του από το μωσαϊκό σε ελεύθερο πάτσγουορκ/ζωγραφική με ύφασμα, χρησιμοποιώντας τα χιλιάδες υφάσματα που συγκέντρωνε όλα τα προηγούμενα χρόνια.

His technique is not anything new in quilting world, with advantage of painting skill he’s concocted some new ideas to make work easier by fusing all his fabric with fusible web and cut to desired size and shapes as he pastes or paints as he calls it. Now he is devoted full time on creating new works for exhibit and a book he’s trying to publish.

Η τεχνική του δεν είναι κάτι καινούργιο για τον κόσμο του πάτσγουορκ. Εχοντας το πλεονέκτημα της ικανότητας στη ζωγραφική, προχώρησε κάποιες ιδέες του για να δουλεύει ευκολότερα. Κολλάει δηλαδή θερμοκολλητικό διπλής όψης  σε όλη την πίσω πλευρά όλων των υφασμάτων του και κόβει το επιθυμητό κάθε φορά σχήμα και μέγεθος. Στη χρονική στιγμή που μιλήσαμε (το καλοκαίρι) προετοίμαζε μια έκθεση και την έκδοση ενός βιβλίου.

  2. Hello, I see some of Danny’s work is pixelated. It might be his early work. Can you find some information for me on the program he uses and the sizes and number of pixels he tries to get? Anything about this process. Many thanks

  3. I am really stunned. I am not a quilter my self, but I have always wanted to start this kind of fabric art. I have of course millions of questions.. But here I am just asking one question. Danny answered earlier; I sew my finished piece using zigzag stitches to secure those raw edges. Well maybe this is a stupid question, but is he sewing this zigzag stitches on each edge og every single piece of fabric? I cant even imagine the volume of the stitch work though. Thank you in advance.

    • Sorry to get back to you so late, but I was out of town with bad connection. I contacted Danny with your question. He replied the following:
      ” the idea is to create a net to cover the entire artwork so those raw edges won’t fray, my last work which will premiere in Houston show is huge it took more than 7 thousand meters of invisible thread to cover the artwork, one advantage of using invisible thread is I can sew it over and over, overlapping and won’t be so visible, I rarely use batting so there’s little worries about my poor sewing techniques if I can find a transparent mesh all my problems will be solved”

  6. Thank you for posting all this info on Danny Amazonas. I have one question. After he has fuzed all the pieces of the top, does he free-motion stitch around the raw-edges of each piece of fabric or does he do straight stitching. I looked at his facebook photos but could see no stitches. Thanks.

    • I was fast, Danny was fast and here is your answer: “To answer your questions I sew my finished piece using zigzag stitches to secure those raw edges it’s so much work involved just like knitting a net to cover the entire artwork, that’s why some of my students use black mesh to cover their works it’s easier to sew I’ve never done it because I’m afraid it might tone down the original bright vivid colors I have intended for, I’m looking for a invisible mesh for years if you happened to find it please let me know., I hope this helps, any other you may have please don’t hesitate to ask”
